Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

• alcohol and spirits
• anti-parasite products for agricultural use
• articles intended for the national library
• bees, leaches, silkworms and beneficial insect parasites
• contraceptives
• carbon paper
• cereals must be accompanied by a certificate of permit
• chemical matches and prepared matchwood
• cocoa plants and seed
• coffee must be accompanied by a certificate of freedom from mealy-pod disease issued by the country of export
• cotton seed
• condensed of evaporated milk containing less than 8% of weight of milk fat
• communications equipment
• contraceptives (other than condoms)
• dried or powdered milk containing less than 26% by weight of milk fat
• dairy products
• films
• fish products
• gambling machines
• handcuffs
• insured boxes and postal parcels containing organic chemicals
• importation of medicaments and other products used in medical treatments
• nets and traps for animals
• machines for duplicating keys
• pathological objects under regulation
• postage stamps
• rough uncut diamonds and gold coins if permitted by the Secretary of Finance and Economic Planning
• television receivers
• uniforms addressed to the person entitled to wear them

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

• artwork, fine
• advertisements
• artificial radio elements and products containing them
• baby comforters and dummies not marked “pure rubber” and with the trademark of the manufacturer
• bank notes, currency
• butane gas cigarette lighters

• cinematic or photographic films

• colouring matter which will cause damage to other packets
• credit card blanks, credit cards
• dairy produce
• distilling apparatus or parts thereof
• drugs without an authority notice
• fish and crustaceans
• foreign cigarettes
• fresh or dried fruit
• head, horn, tusk or skin of any protected animal or the feather or egg of any protected bird
• gaming equipment
• honey
• jewellery (gold, silver, watches, clocks, platinum, diamonds)
• knives
• knuckle dusters and life preservers
• liquids as well as injurious spirits or trade spirits within the meaning of the Liquor Traffic Ordinance
• live trees and other plants

• meat and meat products
• mercuric medicated soap
• metals, non-precious
• narcotic drugs
• oiled paper, oilskins and similar oiled goods

Senders should separately post invoices, Certificate of Origin and any other required certificates to addressees for presentation on delivery. Invoices values must be in pounds sterling.

To facilitate faster customs clearance and delivery it is essential to include all of the following on parcels addressed to Ghana: full name of the addressee, P.O. Box Number, house number and street name, telephone number and email address (if available).

The following documentation may be required:

1. Invoice

2. Final Classification and Valuation Report (FCVR)

3. Import Declaration Form (IDF) from the Ministry of Trade and Industry

4. Tax Clearance Certificate from the Domestic Tax Revenue Agency

5. Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Ghana Revenue Agency

6. Permits or Licenses from the appropriate Ministry/Agency Department

Customs Procedure:

An official for the Post Office will act as an agent for the importer for Customs purposes. Postal packets are to be opened and examined by the Customs Officer in the presence of the person to whom the parcel is addressed or his accreditied representative. Duty will be levied on all chargeable items. Prohibited or restricted items will be seized or detained. Unclaimed postal packets would at the appropriate time be sold by public auction and proceeds will be paid to the government.
